GPG is the GNU Privacy Guard, and is an open source implementation of OpenPGP, is available for Linux / Unix, OS X and yes, even Windows. GPG allows you to encrypt information using extremely strong algorithms (RSA, Triple DES, Blowfish, Twofish, etc.), send and receive encrypted emails, and digitally sign and authenticate information so others not only can be assured of its origin, but verify its integrity as well.
Completely new to PGP style encryption and don't know where to start? Come learn, it's actually quite easy! Make this the year you finally get around to learning how to use public key cryptography - why not? It's FUN! NO SCARY MATH, we promise!
Need to make a key? Don't know how to get started with using GPG and PGP encryption? No worries, the workshop will get you started.
Come to the Open Hack and Learn How To:
- Create a key pair
- Start using GPG to encrypt and decrypt information, send encrypted emails, and even integrate GPG with Gmail.
- Add GPG signatures, and verify the same
- Obtain and exchange public keys using keyservers
- Find keys for people you know
- Sign someone's public key, and get yours signed, to build a web of trust
- Actually use cryptography for useful applications in life
- Using Linux? Learn how you are already using GPG, perhaps without knowing it
Getting Your Key Signed:
What you need to bring:
- Positive, photo identification (drivers license, passport, etc.)
- Your Key ID, Key type, HEX fingerprint, and Key size
Linux users: The package signing-party (available in most distro repos) contains many useful scripts, including gpg-key2ps which can be used to print off a sheet containing handy sized and formatted slips you may hand out at the party.)
You do NOT need to bring a computer, just bring print outs containing the above information.
You will be expected to present the above items. Your public key once signed will be submitted to the hkp://keys.gnupg.net public keyserver, and then automatically redistributed to other keyservers.
