New Member Mentorship Program

We've been working on trying to put together a few new programs. We've got an idea for one that's not fully formed, but we want to gauge interest in it before we spend a bunch of time on it. We are looking at putting together a mentor program that will partner new members with people that have been around for a while to help them get oriented during their trial month.

Open Art Night (P) - Wed 7/9 6:30 PM

Open Art Night is about setting up a weekly event where we get together and practice developing our artistic skills.  We pick a topic and try to tackle it in our preferred media.  Bring your art supplies and come have fun.

Open Art Nights are open to the public.  If you know anyone who has been curious to come out to the space please invite them along!

Hydrophobic Surfaces (P) - Tue 7/8 7:00 PM

Devin will discuss the physics and chemistry of superhydrophobic (extremely water repellent) surfaces, demonstrate the behavior of liquids on surfaces coated with Rustoleum NeverWet, and describe some possible applications of superhydrophobic effects (controllably hydrophobic surfaces, self cleaning surfaces, etc.).  Participants are invited to bring items they want coated with NeverWet to the Show and Share before the talk.

This, like almost all our Tuesday night sessions, is open to the public.  If you know anyone who has been curious to come out to the space please invite them along!

Intro to Sketchup (P) - Tue 7/1 7:00 PM

Andrew will give us an overview of Sketchup. SketchUp (Formerly: Google Sketchup) is a 3D modeling program for applications such as architectural, interior design, civil and mechanical engineering, film, and video game design. A freeware version, SketchUp Make, and a paid version with additional functionality, SketchUp Pro, are available.

This, like almost all our Tuesday night sessions, is open to the public.  If you know anyone who has been curious to come out to the space please invite them along!

Visions of Expanding in Knoxville

I've been working on a vision for what we can be if we move to another space.  I'm very partial to this building off of I-275, and to that end, I've been working on what I think it can be if we move in there.  This'll be a long email, but hopefully it'll give us a springboard for discussion on lots of stuff related to my multi-spam email from last week.

So, the facility is 4,595 gross square feet, roughly divided as ~2/3 open shop area and ~1/3 office space.  I'm mocked up the space in sketchup and filled it with example items from sketchup to show what I think it can look like.  This most of the stuff we have (hard to find a vacuum chamber model on sketchup), and a bunch of stuff that we don't yet, like extra shelves and some additional tools.  Here is an isometric view of the whole place.  No doors are shown because its hard to set them up and you get the idea without them, anyway.

Note: this layout is just my first crack at it, and it's very much open to ideas/discussion.  My wording in this email sounds like it's more final than it is.

Intro to Cosplay (P) - Tue 6/24 7:00 PM

Sam will give us an overview of Cosplay culture. Cosplay, short for "costume play", is a hobby in which participants wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character or idea from science fiction or fantasy literature, comic books, video games, films, manga, and anime.

This, like almost all our Tuesday night sessions, is open to the public.  If you know anyone who has been curious to come out to the space please invite them along!

Open Art Night Follow-up

I wanted to give a little bit of a follow-up on our first meeting of Open Art Night.  There were a few of us there, and we all had a blast.  We talked a bit about ideas for how to run Art Nights a bit.  We're thinking that we want to start off with a few weeks of the using the Open Art Night concept.  Our thoughts for what that will look like is that we'll pick a topic/theme/style for each week Open Art Night.  We want to be pushing and challenging ourselves to open up and try new things, so we'll try to vary the topics.
