Welcome to the (under construction) website for a new Knoxville hackerspace.
Our first meeting is Friday, September 3 at 7:30 PM, at the Cafe 4 on Market Square downtown. You can park for free in the Market Square Garage just around the corner.
If you aren’t familiar with hackerspaces, check out http://hackerspaces.org/wiki/. The rough idea is to form a collective to rent and sustain a physical space somewhere in Knoxville where paying members are free to come together to work on gidgets, gadgets, and otherwise Earth shattering breakthrough novel science. Hackerspaces are not designed to support the development of a single specific project. Instead, they are focused around centralizing expertise and resources so different people working on different projects can help and inspire each other. In addition to the communal workspace and camaraderie, hackerspaces are often able to pool resources and purchase shared expensive equipment, such as rapid prototyping machines, laser cutters, shop equipment and more. Most hackerspaces also include private storage areas where members can securely keep their projects-in-progress. Each member has 24-hour access via key to the facility, and there are regularly scheduled meetings as well.
Roughly, the hackerspace should be able to offer a comfortable space for members to work and keep tools, while charging some non-trivial (and required) monthly membership fee ($50/month is a common number).
Anyone interested should join our mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/tyshs. To actually form the collective, we would need a modest number of dedicated members. We won’t be able to do this in one Craigslist posting, so put your hands up if you’re interested. We can meet, discuss, iterate, recruit, and hopefully someday soon assemble a hackerspace here in Knoxville
